The university's origins date back to 1963 as the Sindh University Engineering College, Jamshoro. In 1974, it was established as a constituent college of the University of Sindh in Nawabshah to broaden engineering access. It was acknowledged as an additional campus in 1976 and finally upgraded to an independent university via an ordinance on March 1, 1977. Originally named Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (Nawabshah), it was later renamed in honor of the former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the 'Quaid-e-Awam.'
