The university was founded in 2002 under a charter by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Ordinance No. XLVIII), established by the EDR Trust. The foundation stone of the main block was laid by the Governor of KP in 2005, and the campus was formally inaugurated in 2008 by General (R) Sawar Khan. In 2009, Northern University achieved a significant milestone by being upgraded to the 'W' level (formerly the 'A' category) by the HEC. Since then, it has transformed from a localized institute into a comprehensive university with four major faculties, maintaining a deep-rooted philosophy of making education accessible through Zakat-funded scholarships and a non-profit operating model.
