Located at the base of the Margalla Hills in Sector E-9, NDU is a unique federal university where civil and military minds collaborate. It acts as the nation's highest-level think-tank, offering a sophisticated academic environment dedicated to National Security, International Relations, and Public Policy through its Faculty of Contemporary Studies (FCS).
The university traces its origins to 1963 as the 'Army War Course' in Quetta, later becoming the National Defence College (NDC) in 1970 upon moving to Rawalpindi. It was relocated to its current Islamabad campus in 1995 and was formally granted a university charter on February 5, 2007. It remains the only institution in the country exclusively focused on the nexus of security, strategy, and statecraft.

However, new students must pay a one-time Admission Charge of ~57,629 PKR, bringing the total first-semester payable amount to approx 146,136 PKR. Subsequent semesters are significantly lower.
