The university's roots date back to 1980 when it was established as the Government College of Engineering & Technology, Mirpur. It served as a constituent college of the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir for nearly three decades. Recognizing its academic maturity and specialized focus, it was upgraded to a full-fledged independent university in August 2008. Since its inception, it has expanded from its historic Allama Iqbal Road campus to include the Mirpur Institute of Technology (MIT) and a dedicated sub-campus in Bhimber.
