Karakoram International University (KIU) is a unique higher education institution situated against the dramatic backdrop of the Hindu Kush and Karakoram mountain ranges. As the primary university of Gilgit-Baltistan, it focuses heavily on mountain studies, glaciology, gemology, and mining engineering. It also hosts the CPEC Center of Excellence, playing a strategic role in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
Established in 2002 by a charter from the Federal Government to provide higher education access to the remote mountain communities of Northern Pakistan.
