A historic pillar of research and agriculture in southern KP. Gomal University is one of Pakistan's oldest public research institutions, spanning a massive 11,000-kanal campus. It is renowned for its Faculty of Agriculture and its Department of Pharmacy, which was among the first in the country to offer professional degrees. The university serves as a vital academic hub for the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the neighboring regions of Punjab and Balochistan, offering highly subsidized, high-quality education across diverse scientific and social disciplines.
The university was founded on May 1, 1974, by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as the 12th oldest university in Pakistan. Its establishment was made possible by the extraordinary philanthropy of Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan, the Nawab of Dera, who donated 11,000 kanals of his ancestral agricultural land to provide a future for the region's youth. Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan also served as the university's first and founding Vice-Chancellor. Since then, GU has evolved from a small cluster of post-graduate schools into a comprehensive university with a legacy of producing elite researchers, including a brief visiting professorship by the renowned scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan.

GU remains one of the most affordable public universities in Pakistan. For the 2025-2026 session, BS Arts and Social Sciences start as low as 18,000 PKR per semester. Computing, Engineering, and Pharmacy programs are approx 35,000 - 45,000 PKR. Self-Finance/Evening programs are slightly higher but still highly subsidized compared to private institutions. A one-time Admission/Registration fee of approx 10,000 PKR applies.
