Pakistan’s pioneer of Community-Based Medical Education (CBME). Located on the M-9 Super Highway, BMU is a unique health-science university founded on the philosophy that medical training must occur within the community it serves. It operates an extensive network of primary healthcare centers across Gadap and Surjani Town, ensuring that students are exposed to social obstetrics and rural healthcare from day one. The university is distinguished by its 'Fatima Hospital' and its specialized 'Baqai Institute of Diabetology & Endocrinology (BIDE),' which is recognized globally for its work in diabetic foot care.
The university was founded in 1988 by the visionary duo, Prof. Dr. Fareeduddin Baqai and Dr. Zahida Baqai, starting with the Baqai Medical College. It was granted a university charter by the Sindh Assembly in 1996, making it one of the first private medical universities in the country. BMU was established to bridge the gap between urban medical excellence and rural health neglect, evolving from a single hospital into a massive educational complex with 13 specialized institutes and a population-coverage of over 2 million people for its community health programs.
