What is Biology?

Biology: The scientific study of life and living organisms. Derived from Greek words 'bios' (life) and 'logos' (study).

Living Organisms: Organisms that show characteristics of life: nutrition, respiration, excretion, growth, movement, reproduction, and sensitivity.

Importance: Understanding diseases, conservation, agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, ecology.

Role of Biologists: Study living things to understand life processes, solve health problems, protect environment, improve agriculture.

Branches of Biology

Major Branches:

  • Zoology: Study of animals
  • Botany: Study of plants
  • Microbiology: Study of microorganisms
  • Genetics: Study of heredity and variation
  • Ecology: Study of organisms and their environment
  • Morphology: Study of form and structure
  • Anatomy: Study of internal structure
  • Physiology: Study of functions of organisms
  • Taxonomy: Classification of organisms
  • Biotechnology: Use of living organisms for human benefit
  • Biochemistry: Study of chemical processes in living organisms

Levels of Biological Organization

Hierarchy from Simple to Complex:

  1. Molecules: Smallest chemical units (DNA, proteins, carbohydrates)
  2. Organelles: Specialized structures within cells (nucleus, mitochondria)
  3. Cells: Basic unit of life
  4. Tissues: Group of similar cells performing same function
  5. Organs: Different tissues working together
  6. Organ Systems: Organs working together (digestive system, respiratory system)
  7. Organism: Complete living individual
  8. Population: Group of same species in same area
  9. Community: Different populations living together
  10. Ecosystem: Community plus non-living environment
  11. Biosphere: All ecosystems on Earth

Scientific Method in Biology

Scientific Method Steps:

  1. Observation: Careful watching and recording of phenomena
  2. Question: Formulating question based on observation
  3. Hypothesis: Proposed testable explanation
  4. Experiment: Testing hypothesis under controlled conditions
  5. Data Collection: Recording results
  6. Analysis: Interpreting data
  7. Conclusion: Accepting or rejecting hypothesis

Controlled Experiment: Experiment with independent variable (changed), dependent variable (measured), and controlled variables (constant).

Theory: Well-tested, widely accepted explanation supported by much evidence.
